Bowlers qualify for D-I districts

YOUNGSTOWN – Four area teams, plus four local individuals, have advanced to the Division I, northeast district bowling tournament after sectionals were held Sunday at Mahoning Valley Lanes.

The Austintown Fitch girls team won their second straight sectional title, finishing with a pin total of 4,051. Coming in second was Roosevelt (3,707)?and Stow-Munroe Falls finished third (3,641).

For both boys and girls, the top three teams and the top three individuals on non-qualifying teams advance to the district tournament, which will be held Sunday at Riviera Lanes in Akron.

The Warren G. Harding girls finished in fourth, but freshman Brianna Nolen was the highest individual qualifier, rolling a three-game series of 579. Along with Nolen, Elena Merhaut of Canfield also qualified as an individual with a 563. The final female qualifier was Angela Piazza of Hudson.

The highest individual score of the day for the girls was Katie Viglio of Fitch. She rolled a 644.

The Boardman boys won the sectional team title with a 4,179. Canfield, the defending state champion, finished second with a 4,159. The third team to qualify was Niles, rolling a 3,937.

Howland’s Matt Hardaway and John LaVange both qualified as individuals, bowling a 625 and 624, respectively. The third qualifier was Logan Booth of Hudson.

Joe Tiberio of Boardman had the highest boys series of the tournament, throwing a 668.
