MADISON 55, HOWLAND 44: MADISON – Julie Gavorski had a game-high 16 points to lead the Blue Streaks past the Tigers in the opener for both teams.

Taylor Gustin added 13 points for Madison (1-0).

Victoria Rappach paced Howland (0-1) with 13 points.

The Tigers host Geneva on Tuesday, with the JV game starting at 6 p.m.

LAKEVIEW 58, GENEVA 39: CORTLAND – Alli Pavlik almost recorded a double-double in Lakeview’s season opener, scoring 19 points and grabbing eight steals to lead the Bulldogs past the Eagles.

Overall, Lakeview (1-0) had 19 steals to Geneva’s six. Callie Schmitt added 15 points for the Bulldogs to complement Pavlik’s total, while Lindsey Mayle led Geneva (0-1) with 19 points.

Monday, Lakeview travels to Warren G. Harding. The JV tipoff is at 6 p.m.

WEST BRANCH 66, URSULINE 31: YOUNGSTOWN – The Warriors jumped out to a 14-point lead at the end of the first quarter and ran away for a big win over the Irish in both teams’ openers.

West Branch (1-0) shot just under 50 percent from the field, while holding Ursuline to a 30-percent shooting performance. Junior point guard Melinda Trimmer picked up right where she left off last season, scoring 21 points and going 7 of 7 from the charity stripe.

Sophomore forward Tanya Beacham paced the Irish with 11 points.

BROOKFIELD 37, LIBERTY 35: BROOKFIELD – In a close contest, Brookfield eked out a two-point win over Liberty in both team’s openers on Saturday.

The Warriors (1-0) and Leopards (0-1) played pretty evenly all game, especially in the second half when both teams scored 17 points each.

It was a team effort for Brookfield, as seven different players made the scoresheet. Delany Saxton paced the Warriors with 12 points on 6 of 9 shooting and 7 rebounds, while Autumn Kirila dished out 10 assists.

Leah Leshnack led the Leopards, producing 50 percent of Liberty’s offensive output on the night with 18 points.

PYMATUNING VALLEY 60, YOUNGSTOWN CHRISTIAN 26: BOARDMAN – Low-post play from the duo of Megan Stech and Kelsea Brown powered the Lakers past the Eagles in non-conference play on Saturday.

The two players combined for 19 of PV’s (1-0) 24 offensive rebounds, and both posted double-doubles. Stech went for a game-high in points with 31 (12 of which came in the third quarter) and rebounds with 21, while Brown added 16 points and 16 rebounds.

Kayla Rios led the way for the Eagles (0-1), scoring 11 points.

CANFIELD 42, CHARDON 37: CANFIELD – In a sloppy game, the Cardinals managed to win their season opener at home against Chardon on Saturday.

Canfield (1-0) recovered from a slow first quarter in which the team scored six points by shooting 50 percent from the field. Turnovers and bad free-throw shooting plagued the Cardinals, allowing Chardon to keep it close. Canfield committed 26 turnovers and went 6 of 14 from the charity stripe.

Rachel Tinkey led the way for the Cardinals, dropping 24 points on the Hilltoppers, while Erin Risner added nine.
