Boardman graduate Campbell enjoys busy day for Buffalo

COLUMBUS – When Ohio State scored three times in the first quarter, it looked as if Buffalo kick returner and Boardman High School graduate Devin Campbell was going to set a record for kick returns on the day.

While he didn’t cross that bridge, he did have six returns for 75 yards for the Bulls in their 40-20 loss to Ohio State on Saturday. His long on the day was 16 yards. He also had two catches for 31 yards as a receiver.

“We didn’t come out like we should have in the first quarter, but then our coach (Jeff Quinn) got us going, our seniors got us going and we just took it from there and played our game,” Campbell said.

Campbell is no stranger to Ohio Stadium. In 2012, he played in the Ohio North-South All-Star game, but nearly every other member of the UB team was making their first appearance at The Shoe, including fellow Youngstown native Alex Zordich.

“I think we were a little overexcited,” Campbell said. “It’s a great atmosphere here and it’s exciting playing in front of all these people.”

CAUSE WOODY SAID SO: Former Ohio State coach Woody Hayes is remembered for many things, but one of his more memorable quotes about 2-point conversions was, “because the rules won’t let me go for three.” Apparently current OSU coach Urban Meyer was channeling the famous coach against Buffalo.

After Ohio State’s first two scores, Meyer called for the 2-point conversion, which was run with success.

“I think as many ways to get cheap points and make people work … it looked good today,” Meyer said.

THE STREAK LIVES ON: With the victory on Saturday, Ohio State continues the nation’s longest current winning streak with 13.

Also, the Buckeyes have opened the season with a win every year since 2000 and are 33-2 in its last 35 season openers.

Meyer has his own streak going on as he is 12-0 in his career in season debuts.

NEW FACES: The Buckeyes, who took a major hit on the defensive side of the ball between 2012 and 2013, had nine new defensive starters in Saturday’s lineup.

The only returning starters on Saturday were Ryan Shazier and Christian Bryant.

PERSONAL RECORDS: Jordan Hall set two personal records on Saturday.?He rushed for a career-high 159 yards and also had the longest single run of his career, which was a 49-yard dash. It also was Hall’s first multiple-touchdown game.

While he didn’t set a record, Braxton Miller is working his way up the record books. With 77 rushing yards, he eclipsed the 2,000-yard rushing mark for his career and now has 2,063. He is 17 yards short of Cornelius Greene’s Ohio State record of 2,080 yards rushing by a quarterback.

Lastly, Curtis Grant had a career-high seven tackles.
