Time for football

For local football fans, tonight is the night you have been waiting for.

At 7 p.m., the high school football season gets underway with four local games.

Niles travels to Girard’s Arrowhead Stadium in one of the more anticipated games of the week.

On opening night of 2012, the Red Dragons began their impressive, playoff-bound season by beating Girard 34-13 at Bo Rein Stadium.

The other three games on the schedule for Friday are Struthers at Campbell, Marlington at Poland in a rematch of their Week 11 playoff game, and Rootstown at Newton Falls.

Thursday night is just the teaser for the filled Friday night action around the Valley.

The marquee game this weekend is the now-annual opener between Austintown Fitch and Warren G. Harding.

Last season, the Falcons spoiled the debut of coach Steve Arnold and beat the Raiders, 24-10. Harding went on from there to win its next nine games.

Other highlighted games on the schedule are the Hubbard Eagles visiting the Lakeview Bulldogs, Springfield at Brookfield, Kenmore taking on Howland and LaBrae traveling to Jefferson for an All-American Conference, National Division matchup.

The high school schedule wraps up Saturday with Cardinal Mooney hosting Imhotep Charter School and South Range visiting John F. Kennedy.
