Scrappers win second straight, reach 10 wins on season

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – On an extremely hot and sticky night in Brooklyn, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers 2-1 victory over the Cyclones secured the team’s second series win of the year.

With temperatures pushing near 100 degrees for the second straight night, Venezuelan native Luis Lugo was dominant. The lefty worked five innings allowing only four hits. He walked one and struck out three without allowing a run. Cole Sulser followed and was just as good. Sulser worked two scoreless innings. He allowed just two hits and struck out one without walking a batter.

Manuel Carmona was called on to work the eighth and ninth innings. Carmona ran into trouble in the eighth with one out he walked back to back hitters. An RBI groundout by L.J. Mazzilli cut the lead to 2-1. Josh McAdams then made the catch of the season for Mahoning Valley (10-22). Jared King sliced a fly ball towards shallow centerfield. McAdams on a full sprint, dove with full extension and was able to secure the catch just inches above the grass to end the inning and strand the tying run at third.

Harold Guerrero made quick work of Anthony Chavez with a strikeout and pinch hitter Alex Sanchez bounced out on the first pitch he saw to end the game.

The Scrappers offense was held in check for most of the night, just one day after collecting 13 hits, the most allowed by Brooklyn this season. It wasn’t until the top of the seventh inning when they woke up the bats. Having struggled this season in clutch situations, the Scrappers turned to Martin Cervenka with two out and two on base. Cervenka lifted a 1-0 pitch high off the wall in left field to score Nellie Rodriguez and McAdams for all the runs the Scrappers would need.

The back-to-back wins are the first for Mahoning Valley since June 19 and 20. Mahoning Valley begins a three-game series with the Staten Island Yankees tonight at 7 p.m.
