Bornemiss to take over Mathews’ girls basketball team
Former Jackson-Milton boys varsity basketball coach Joe Bornemiss left the program a couple of years ago.
Work obligations took him away from what he was trying to build – a winning program for the Blue Jays.
The Blue Jays eventually won a Inter Tri-County League title the year after Bornemiss left.
He was hoping to build something at Jackson-Milton.
Now, he has his chance to resurrect a Mathews girls basketball program that has struggled in recent memory.
Bornemiss was recently hired as the Mustangs mentor and had his first open gym Tuesday night.
“It was very exciting,” he said.
He hopes that excitement translates to each and every game this upcoming season.
“Just to bring that mentality that we can be competitive and challenge every game,” Bornemiss said. “Win or lose, we want to make the that opposite team know we were there to play.”
He’s been coaching boys basketball for more than 20 years, but this is something new. That said, he won’t change his coaching style.
“It doesn’t matter to me,” Bornemiss said. “You’re a basketball player, whether you’re a boy or a girl. I’m going to coach you like I would anyone else.”
