Shade sets school strikeout mark
Newton Falls’ Bailey Shade set a new school record, recording her 800th strikeout, but it wasn’t enough as Jefferson rallied in the ninth inning to take down the Tigers in softball action, 5-1. Shade struck out 12 batters in the game.
Led by a two-run Amanda Krause single, Jefferson put up four runs in the ninth for the win. The Tigers scored their lone run of the game on Jenna Ballas’ third home run of the season.
A three-run sixth inning propelled Lakeview past LaBrae, 4-1, in All-American Conference, National Division action. The Bulldogs had a 1-0 lead after an RBI single by Brooke Waid in the fifth, but an Alyssa Nicholas solo home run started the three-run rally, leading Lakeview to the win.
Niles’ Sammy Melius hit a three-run triple in the seventh inning, leading a comeback victory over Liberty, 7-6. The Red Dragons scored six runs in the seventh to come back for the victory.
Mackayla Kroll struck out 15 batters and Amanda Scott accounted for two of John F. Kennedy’s three hits and drove in the only run of the game in the Eagles’ 1-0 North Coast League victory over St. Peter Chanel. Kroll tossed a one-hitter and didn’t yield a walk in a complete-game effort. The Firebirds’ Britany Varsho struck out nine and didn’t walk a batter in the loss.
Stephanie Ohalek hit a bases-loaded, two-out RBI single to give Ursuline a 4-3 win over Conneaut in the bottom of the eighth inning. Ohalek finished with two hits and two RBIs. Makayla Shore of Ursuline (16-5) scattered five hits and struck out eight for her 14th win. Lexi Zappitelli led Conneaut (12-5) with two hits and two RBIs.
April Lude and Jenny Stubbs both homered in Western Reserve’s 12-0 drubbing of Wellsville in an Inter Tri-County League matchup. Gabby Stubbs doubled and drove in four for the Blue Devils (17-2, 12-0).
Ally Hajnosz and Kansas Lickwar each had three-run home runs and five RBIs to lead Lordstown past Badger, 14-2, in five innings. Lickwar hit her three-run shot in the top of the first inning, while Hajnosz hit hers in the third.
Leigh Gatta had three RBIs in McDonald’s 14-8 loss to Columbiana.
Mathews’ Jacki Rhine had three RBIs to lead the Mustangs past Grand Valley, 9-2.
