Newton Falls’ Shade pitches perfect game

NEWTON FALLS – Bailey Shade pitched a perfect game in the Tigers’ opener against Hubbard, a 6-0 win.

Shade struck out 17 batters, and of the four balls that went into play, not a single one left the infield. The four were three ground-outs and a pop out to the shortstop.

Jenna Ballas did most of the damage on offense for Newton Falls (1-0), hitting a two-run bomb in the fourth inning.

Hubbard will look to bounce back against LaBrae at home today. The game starts at 5 p.m. Newton Falls welcomes Southeast on Saturday.

Shade was one of numerous pitchers to have successful days on the mound Thursday. Mathews’ Cheyenne Eggens pitched a two-hitter and struck out 13 in a win against Boardman, and Brookfield’s Lyndsey Berecek pitched a two-hitter against Grand Valley.

On the baseball diamond, Austintown Fitch’s Austin Cooper pitched a no-hitter against Lakeview and John F. Kennedy used three pitchers to one-hit Lordstown.
