Barnes slated to be new YSU women’s coach
According to a late Thursday report from the Green Bay Press Gazette, Green Bay assistant coach John Barnes should be named the Youngstown State University women’s basketball coach as early as today.
The paper cited an unnamed source, but could not reach Barnes for comment.
According to WBAY, an ABC affiliate in Green Bay, it confirmed Barnes interviewed at YSU earlier this week.
Barnes replaces Bob Boldon, who was hired by Ohio University last Friday, after spending three last years with the Penguins – including last year’s 23-10 season and WNIT second-round appearance.
Boldon was the Horizon League Coach of the Year and outgoing senior Brandi Brown was named Horizon League Player of the Year.
Barnes was Kevin Borseth’s assistant coach in the 2011-12 season at Michigan and followed him back to Green Bay this past season.
Prior to Michigan he was an assistant for one season at Wisconsin.
Before Wisconsin, he was a successful coach at Michigan Tech, an NCAA Division II program in seven seasons.
