YSU women take down UIC
CHICAGO – Thursday, the Youngstown State women’s basketball team finally got itself on the right side of a .500 record.
The Penguins hit 11 3-pointers en route to a 67-54 win at UIC.
YSU has matched its conference win total from last year and tied for its most overall wins since 1999-2000. YSU also earned its seventh road win tonight, its most since 1999-2000.
The win improves YSU to 14-5 overall and 4-2 in Horizon League play while UIC drops to 6-13 and 2-4.
YSU senior Brandi Brown paced the Penguins with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Liz Hornberger scored nine of her 12 points in the second half. Boardman native Monica Touvelle scored nine of her 11 in the first half.
UIC (6-13, 2-4) began Thursday’s game with an 18-16 lead with 11:30 before halftime, but YSU quickly doused the Flames with a 19-6 run.
YSU outscored UIC 18-4 off turnovers and 15-0 in second-chance points. Touvelle and Heidi Schlegel combined for 20 points off the bench while UIC had five bench points as a team.
Sunday, the Penguins are at Wright State. Tipoff is at 3 p.m.
