Girard girls defeat Ursuline

MINERAL RIDGE – Going into the fourth quarter tied, the Indians managed to pull away down the stretch to beat the Fighting Irish in a Division III sectional final, 56-47.

Girard amassed an eight-point lead with two minutes remaining, thanks in large part to Haley Spalla scoring all six of her points in the fourth, and used in a 7-of-8 performance from the charity stripe down the stretch to seal the win.

Miranda Boyle and Bree Bishop paced the Indians, with Boyle dropping 22 points and Bishop adding 21. Both players did a lot of damage from the foul line, combining for 18 of Girard’s 24 made free throws.

Sydney Beasley led Ursuline with 20 points, draining three 3-pointers in the losing effort.

The Indians now will face United in a Division III?district semifinal.

CANFIELD 80, NILES 19: AUSTINTOWN – The Cardinals jumped out to a 33-point lead and never looked back in a rout of the Red Dragons in a sectional final.

Canfield had 12 players make the scoresheet, led by Sabrina Magnapora with 18 points. Kayla Barko and Abby Baker added 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Makayla Butler paced Niles with seven points.

Canfield returns to action in the district semifinal against Struthers in the Austintown district semifinal at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

POLAND 41, RAVENNA 37: AUSTINTOWN – Poland rallied from a 32-27 deficit to the start the fourth quarter to beat Ravenna in this Division II sectional final at Austintown Fitch High School.

The Bulldogs were down 29-13 at halftime before holding the Ravens to eight points in the second half.

Aleah Hughes paced Poland with 18 points, while Kasie Serich added 12.

Ja’Lynn Starks led Ravenna with nine points.

Poland plays second-seeded West Branch Thursday in a district semifinal.
