District wrestling starts today

Wrestlers from around the Mahoning Valley will have a chance at qualifying for the state tournament starting today.

Fifty wrestlers in three divisions will try to place in the top four at their respective district tournament, which advances them to next week’s state tournament at the Jerome Schottenstein Center in Columbus.

The Division I district tournament is at Mentor High School. Wrestling starts at 5 p.m. tonight and 9 a.m. on Saturday. Boardman has five wrestlings taking part – Nick Mancini (113 pounds), Mario Graziani (132), Justin Humphreys (220), Peter Ryan (126) and Joe Cordova (182) – while Austintown Fitch has three in Mike Hafley (138), Zach Mackall (145), Camran Rezapourian (170).

Howland, Canfield, Poland, Hubbard and Southeast all have wrestlers taking part in the Division II district tournament at Alliance High School, where wrestling begins at 3 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m on Saturday. The Tigers of Howland boast eight wrestlers, with Nico Lucarelli (113), Alex Cornicelli (126), Gabe Stark (145), David Brian Whisler (152), Jordan Radich (160), Josh Grodesky (182), Andrew Rolfe (195) and Mike Bell (285) all taking part. Canfield qualified six: Korey Frost (113), C.J. Frost (132), John Poullas (170), Stan Socha (182), Hayden Smith (195) and Curtis Burns (285). Poland is bringing four: Dante Ginnetti (106), Tad Duran (126), Anthony Mancini (145) and Mike Audi (170). Southeast’s trio of Hunter McPeak (132), Brandon James (170) and Santana Barrera (220) will be on hand along with Hubbard’s Tyreek Daniels (285).

Jackson-Milton qualified seven wrestlers for the Division III district tournament at Garfield Heights High School. Wrestling starts up at 4 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. on Saturday. The Blue Jays’ Mitch Tikkanen (106), Terry Stockton (113), Devin Seka (120), Joe Burnside (132), Tyler Staton (138), Tyler Jeffries (145) and Corley Lamb (285) will all wrestle today. Girard has six wrestlers: Dominic Gainey (113), Zane Chase (120), Garrett Bass (138), James Cupan (160), Nick Cardiero (152) and Ryan Leasure (170). Liberty has four in Brandon Jefferson (145), Tyrell Jethrow (152), Cody BuCher (220) and Danaryll Green (285). Brookfield’s Zach Jamieson (160), Zach Hackett (195) and David Jamieson (220) will be wrestling today.
