Area swimmers get at-large bids to state
The waiting is over.
The Ohio High School Athletic Association announced its at-large bids for this year’s state swim meet at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton, which starts on Wednesday.
Harding’s Dylan Thirion is heading to state in the 100-yard freestyle, but didn’t make it in the 200 freestyle. The Raiders’ 200 medley relay also didn’t get an at-large berth in Division I.
However, Harding’s Emily Thirion got the ninth seed in the girls Division I breaststroke and 21st in the 100 butterfly.
Emily Thirion will be joined by Howland’s Aimee Gysegem, who is 19th in the 500 freestyle. She didn’t make it in the 200 freestyle.
Also, Howland’s Brandon Sekanick is seeded 20th in the Division II 100-yard breaststroke.
Back to Division I, the Boardman girls advanced in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.
The Spartans have more representation at state and are led by Ryan Bailey, who won the Division I district title in the 100-yard butterfly, has the overall No. 1 seed in that event after clocking a 49.32 – the only time less than 50 seconds in the field. Bailey finished third in this event at last year’s state meet.
Bailey also got an at-large berth in the 100-yard breaststroke and is the ninth-overall seed.
In Division II, Ursuline’s John Tomko has some good footing heading into state as he is the fifth seed in the 200 freestyle and sixth in the 500 freestyle.
Hubbard’s Joey Spurio, who won the 100 butterfly at district, is seeded fifth. He didn’t make it as an at-large in the 200 freestyle.
Both Tomko and Spurio were automatic qualifiers for state, finishing in the top two in their respective events.
Meanwhile, Canfield’s boys has the largest contingent heading to state. The boys 200 freestyle relay is seeded third, while the 400 freestyle relay is fourth.
