Area swimmers advance

AKRON – Warren G. Harding’s Dylan Thirion got second place in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events at the Division I sectional at the University of Akron to automatically qualify for next weekend’s Division I at Cleveland State University.

Thirion swam 48.43 in the 100 and 1:49.31 in the 200.

The top two in each event automatically qualify to districts, but more relays and individuals will get in based on times to districts as at-large bids.

The Harding 200 medley relay of Thirion, Michael Miller, Sam Angelo and Zackary Williams placed third (1:42.99).

Boardman’s Ryan Bailey won the 100 butterfly (50.85) and took second in the 100 breaststroke (59.34).

Harding’s boys took sixth in the south sectional with 170 points, while Boardman was sixth in the north sectional with 157 points.

Ursuline’s John Tomko won the Division II 500 freestyle (4:55.49). He was 5 seconds faster than the second-place finisher.

Tomko took second in the 200 freestyle (1:47.66), while Hubbard’s Joe Spurio was third (1:50.94). Spurio was second in the 100 butterfly (53.71).

Canfield’s 200 freestyle relay took first (1:28.25).

Nicholas Montalto was first in the 100 freestyle (48.53), and Connor Brady took first in the 100 butterfly (53.28).

The Cardinals’ 400 freestyle relay finished first (3:17.91), while the 200 medley relay was second (1:48.20).

Brady was second in the 100 backstroke (55.34), while Kyle Anderson took third in the 200 individual medley (2:08.24).

The Division I girls (Harding, Canfield, Boardman) swim today in Akron, while Howland’s Aimee Gysegem is at the Spire Institute for a Division I sectional. The Division II girls at Akron are tonight. And, there are Division II boys (Grand Valley, Howland and Lakeview) and Division II girls (Youngstown Christian) at Hawken.
