Girls basketball

WINDHAM 52, EAST CANTON 41: WINDHAM -Down by one after the first quarter, Windham was able to bounce back to pick up its 11th win of the season.

East Canton (8-11) led 14-13 after the first, and Windham used a 10-7 second quarter to take a 23-21 lead into halftime. Windham (11-8) used a 19-7 third quarter to help pad its lead and chalk up the victory.

Jessica Isler led the charge for Windham with 19 points on the night. Dari Heller added 11 for the Bombers.

Megan Gothard nailed four 3-pointers and scored 17 points total in the loss for East Canton. Brianna Payne chipped in with 10 for the Wizards.

SOUTHEAST 65, MOGADORE 54: PALMYRA – Southeast started off fast and was able to pick up its 12th win of the season.

Southeast (12-4, 10-1 Portage Trail Conference) was leading 19-13 after the first quarter and was able to maintain the lead.

Kalelyn McCullough and Britany Butcher each scored 13 points for Southeast and Jillian Fesemyer added 10 for the Pirates

Mogadore (7-8, 6-5 PTC) got 16 points from Grace Riley, Mackenzie Williams poured in 14 and Ashler Barker added 10.

WOODRIDGE 48, GARFIELD 43: Penninsula – Garfield led early but was unable to get the win.

Although Garfield was leading by seven points at the half, Woodridge used a 16-6 third quarter and was able to hold on for the victory.

Garfield was led offensively by Becky Kirk as she scored 13. Melody Bright scored nine and Madisson Geddes and Jackie Tabor each scored eight for the G-Men.

Woodridge’s Lizzie Wilkinson had a game-high 20 points and Kapri Watson scored 17 for the Bulldogs.

  • HUBBARD?BEATS STRUTHERS: HUBBARD – In the All-American Conference tournament play, the Hubbard girls defeated Struthers 930 to 574.

Hubbard’s Brittany Ferrara broke a school series record by bowling a 538. Jenna Wise bowled a series of 392 for the Eagles. Struthers’ Kaylie Thompson tallied a series of 307 and Macayla Razo bowled a 267.

Hubbard will host Howland on Monday at Bellwick Bowl in the second round of conference tournaments.


  • CANFIELD, JACKSON-MILTON?LOSE: PERRY – The Canfield High School wrestling team suffered a 37-36 defeat in the Division II, Region 11-A semifinal with Mentor Lake Catholic.

The Cardinals (15-3) won three straight matches to cut into a 13-point deficit and trailed, 31-30. Canfield, a No. 3 seed, endured a pin at 220 pounds, which sealed the victory for the second-seeded Cougars.

In Tuslaw, Jackson-Milton, a six seed, couldn’t upset the No. 2 Rootstown Rovers, falling, 51-26 in a Division III, Region 20 semifinal. The Blue Jays won five of the 11 matches but gave up three forfeits and four pins in the defeat.

JEFFERSON 55, LAKEVIEW 46: CORTLAND – Brett Powers had seven of his eight points in the third quarter as the Falcons rolled out to an 18-8 first-quarter lead and never trailed this All-American Conference, National Division contest.

This was a make-up contest from Dec. 21.

Jacob Hamilton led the balanced scoring attack for Jefferson (4-6, 2-3) with 10 points.

Jake Pishotti, who had 12 of his 16 game-high points in the second half, paced Lakeview (1-9, 0-4). The Bulldogs play Friday at Girard.

LORAIN 40, WARREN G. HARDING 28: LORAIN – Destiny Wilson had 14 points, while Angelique Flores added 12 as Lorain beat Warren G. Harding in Lake Erie League action.

Moesha Parks led Harding with eight points.

SOUTHEAST 72, ROOTSTOWN 49: PALMYRA- Southeast jumped on to a 24-11 first-quarter lead and was able to beat Rootstown.

Southeast was led by Brittany Butcher who scored 32 points for the Pirates. Butcher had the hot hand from beyond the arc, nailing eight 3-pointers. Brandi Barkurst scored 14 points for Rootstown in the loss.

WINDHAM 55, GARFIELD 23: GARRETTSVILLE – Windham picked up a win with strong performances from Jessica Isler and Dari Heller.

Isler scored 20 points, had eight steals and dished out six assists for Windham (8-5, 6-2 Portage Trail Conference County Division). Heller scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Bombers.

Garfield(4-7, 2-4 PTC County) was led by Madisson Geddes with 10 points.


Canfield High School 5, Garfield Heights 3: BOARDMAN – On senior night, senior captain Pat Bassett scored twice off feeds from junior captain, Nick Crescimanno and the Cards fended off the fiesty Garfield Heights Bulldogs in a 5-3 victory in Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League action.

Crescimanno added two goals and PJ Denney chipped in with one for Canfield. Seniors Jared Daugherty and Josh Tancer made strong defensive plays to help hold Garfield Heights team to just 15 shots.

Tim Fernstrom had two assists, while Danny Drotleff, JP Clendenin, Bassett, and Britanny Bettille had one helper each. Megan Cole picked up the victory in net.

The Cards (2-13) take on Nordonia Sunday night at Gilmour Academy.


HUBBARD: Hubbard’s Joe Spurio placed first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.87) and Julia Castner was first in the 200-yard freestyle (2:09.96) as the Eagles lost to Canfield Tuesday.
