Wednesday highlights
BASEBALL
John F. Kennedy’s Cameron Hollobaugh allowed just two runs in a complete-game performance to help the Eagles beat 2018 Division IV state runner-up Trinity, 3-2. Hollobaugh struck out six and allowed five hits in the win. Jordan Edmondson had three hits, including a double, for JFK.
Niles’ Corbin Foy struck out seven and allowed just four hits in six innings as Niles topped Poland, 4-1, for a Northeast-8 Conference victory.
Champion’s Andrew Russell fired a perfect game, striking out 13 in a 13-0 win over Campbell. Russell also drove in two, while Matt Horvath added two doubles.
Gordon Seger of Grand Valley allowed just three hits in the Mustangs’ 7-2 victory over Jefferson. Seger struck out seven and didn’t walk a batter in the win.
Frank Hiland pitched well in a losing effort for Maplewood, fanning six and allowing two runs on six hits and no walks in a 2-0 loss to Newbury.
SOFTBALL
Ketley Fresch hit a grand slam to power Garfield to a 14-0, five-inning win over Lake Center Christian. Hannah Smith shut down LCC, allowing three hits while striking out eight. Madi Van Kirk added three hits, including a homer and a double.
Hubbard’s Hannah Kist homered as part of a three-hit performance in the Eagles’ 11-5 win over Lakeview.
Brookfield’s Bailey Drapola blasted a three-run homer for the Warriors’ in their 7-2 victory over Edgewood.
Champion’s Sophie Howell twirled a five-inning perfect game, striking out 12 in the Golden Flashes 19-0 win over Campbell in Game 1 of a doubleheader. Carli Swipas and Gabby Hollenbaugh each had four hits and drove in three for Champion (11-1). Allison Smith followed with a no-hitter in Game 2, striking out 12 in a 16-0 win. Smith homered twice in the victory.
Sophie Tvaroch drove in five runs and Zoe McElrath added four RBIs as Newton Falls routed Liberty, 20-6. Tvaroch had a double and a single and McElrath blasted a grand slam homer for the Tigers.
Caitie Perry and Alaina Scavina it back-to-back homers in both the first and second innings and Scavina scattered four hits and a walk while fanning seven on the mound in Cardinal Mooney’s 10-0 rout of Canton Central Catholic. Perry finished with four runs batted in.
