Lakeview edges Newton Falls
LAKEVIEW 56, NEWTON FALLS 53: CORTLAND — Daniel Evans scored 20 points and Jeff Remmick (12) and AJ McClellan (10) combined for 21 as the Bulldogs (2-0) won a close contest. Lakeview led 18-12 after one quarter before the Tigers (1-1) roared back for a 32-29 halftime lead. Falls still led 43-42 headed into the final quarter. Gage Friend had 13 points, 12 rebounds and four assists for Newton Falls and Preston Rapczak added 12 points. Adam Honeycutt, Joey Kline and Josh Honeycutt scored eight apiece.
POLAND 63, HOWLAND 45: POLAND — Braeden O’Shaughnessy scored his 1,000th career point and led all scorers with 28 in the Bulldogs’ non-conference victory over Howland.
Poland led by 15 after the first quarter, but the Tigers (0-2) went on a 16-6 run to pull within five by halftime. The Bulldogs regained control in the third and led by 13 entering the final frame. O’Shaughnessy, a senior, also paced Poland in rebounds (13) and assists. (3).
Frank Manios paced Howland with 12, and Nathan Barrett added 11.
NILES 65, SALEM 57: SALEM — Cyler Kane-Johnson and Corbin Foy combined for 53 points as the Red Dragons held off Salem.
Kane-Johnson, who opened the season with 55 points, poured in 31 more on Tuesday. Foy scored 22 for Niles (2-0), which only led by two at halftime before outscoring the Quakers 33-25 in the second half.
Josh Young led Salem with 17.
SOUTH RANGE 58, URSULINE 54: NORTH LIMA — South Range rallied past the Irish with a big fourth quarter.
The Raiders trailed 43-36 entering the final eight minutes, but they outscored Ursuline, 22-11, in the fourth. Chris Brooks (22 points) and Jaxon Anderson (21) led all scorers.
Daysean Harris scored a team-best 20 for Ursuline.
HUDSON 61, AUSTINTOWN FITCH 38: AUSTINTOWN — The Falcons (0-2) fell behind 12-5 after one quarter and trailed 23-13 at halftime. Hudson continued to stretch the lead, opening it to 41-26 after three quarters. Todd Simons was a bright spot for Fitch with 20 points.
