Windham grounded in loss to Garfield

WINDHAM — The rushing attack of Garfield proved too strong for Windham as the G-Men handed the Bombers their first loss, with a 40-12 Friday on the Bombers’ field.

“We played a really good team,” Garfield coach Mike Moser said. “They were the most physical team we’ve seen all year long. We knew it was going to be a great challenge, and our kids responded.”

Garfield (4-1) threw only three passes throughout the game, all of them falling incomplete. That didn’t stop the G-Men however, as all six touchdowns came on the ground from three different rushers. Between the six different rushers, Garfield had no problem moving the ball, totaling up 455 total yards on the ground.

“We’re running a lot, but I thought we had a couple shots (passing),” Moser said. “We had a little slip screen in the first quarter that we dropped, and we had a couple of shots later. The credit goes to our guys. When the kids are blocking it doesn’t matter what I call.”

Junior running back Connor Hrubik had 18 attempts for 237 yards and two touchdowns. The first touchdown came off of a 90-yard rush on the first play of Garfield’s first drive. On his final touch of the game, Hrubik’s 24-yard rush set up the final touchdown by the G-Men.

Austin Lysiak scored the third touchdown of a 22-point third quarter on a 1-yard sneak up the middle.

Senior Devyn Penna rushed for 124 yards on his seven attempts, with three touchdowns to show for it.

The Bombers put their first points on the board late in the third quarter. Hunter Shackleford broke free for a 52-yard touchdown. Midway through the fourth quarter, Windham found the endz one once more, coming on a 1-yard Mason Angle run.

Discipline set the tone early, with Windham getting three penalties on their first drive, leading to a fourth and 40. After the punt, Garfield tailback Hrubik rushed for his first touchdown on the night.

“We thought all week long about penalties,” Moser said. “With rivalry games you always worry about that stuff. We talked to our kids all week long about just playing football.

“At the end of the day that’s all this is. I think we played disciplined, not just in the area of penalties, but blocking the guys you’re supposed to block. We tackled well, we ran well. I think we played disciplined all night.”

Windham (4-1) looks to recover from the loss, opening its Northeastern Athletic Conference schedule against Mathews, while Garfield heads to Valley Christian for a Portage Trails Conference County Division matchup against the Eagles.
