WGH, Irish postponed

The storms that swept through the Mahoning Valley Friday evening seemed long gone when Warren G. Harding and Ursuline kicked off their game at Mollenkopf Stadium.

The start time was pushed back an hour to 8 p.m. in order to allow time for the storm to pass through.

Six plays from scrimmage into the game, Ursuline was set to punt on fourth-and-7 from the Harding 43.

At that time, a member of the officiating crew saw lightning and the game was delayed for 30 minutes. According to Ohio High School Athletic Association protocol, during a delay for lightning officials must restart the 30-minute countdown each time lightning is seen.

About an hour after the delay was first called, officials decided to suspend the game because more lightning was spotted.

The game will be resumed today at 1 p.m. Admission to the game is free.
