MV splits doubleheader

NILES — The Mahoning Valley Scrappers inched closer to their goal of winning the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division on Thursday night, splitting a doubleheader with the Batavia Muckdogs at Eastwood Field.

The Scrappers (39-32) won the opener, 2-1, before dropping a 1-0 decision in the second game. Meanwhile, the Auburn Doubledays also split a doubleheader at Williamsport, losing 7-2 and then beating the Crosscutters, 5-1.

Auburn (38-34) trails Mahoning Valley by 1 1/2 games. Both teams have four games remaining, with the Scrappers playing their final regular season home game tonight against Batavia.

On Thursday, three MV pitchers fired six shutout innings in the opener after Cleveland Indians pitcher Cody Anderson — pitching on a rehab assignment — gave up an unearned run in the first inning. Zack Draper followed with four shutout innings and Luis Santos and Manuel Alvarez finished up for the Scrappers.

Henry Pujols tied the game for Mahoning Valley with a two-out single in the third, then Clark Scolamiero put the Scrappers ahead for good with a sacrifice fly in the fourth.

In the nightcap, three Batavia pitchers blanked the Scrappers on just three hits.
