Chalker QB set for big season

Coming off of a disappointing 2-8 season, Chalker quarterback Trystan Mollohan returns for his senior year, and after spending some offseason time with top area talent, he is ready to end his high school career on a high note and lead his team to its first playoff berth since 2013.

Mollohan recently went on a bus trip with Raw Talent Sports. Raw Talent Sports is an academy for athletes to get extra training throughout the offseason. On the bus trip, the athletes had workouts at some major schools like Penn State, West Virginia, Pittsburgh and Michigan State.

“We took a trip for a whole week, stayed in hotels, had off-days, it was a blast,” Mollohan said. “The camps were amazing, every coach was always telling us ‘You can be great if you put the work in.’ “

Mollohan put the work in at the camps. He learned a new way to drop back and an improved grip on the ball that provides a bit more control and accuracy in his passing.

With that new-found accuracy, Mollohan’s goal this season is to break the Chalker single-season passing record.

“The record is around 1,400 yards,” Mollohan said. “Last season I had 1,099 and that was off of terrible throwing. I had no idea what I was doing last year. I didn’t know how to read a defense, I barely knew how to throw. I shouldn’t have skipped out on Raw Talent last year because they helped me a lot. I can read a defense much better. My throwing is way better, and they taught me how to hold the ball better, so I think we should be really good this year.”

Mollohan mostly talked about his team goals however, starting with going 1-0 every Friday night. A mantra given to him by head coach Tom Conrad.

“We want to be 1-0 every Friday,” Mollohan said. “I’m hoping we get a lot of rushing yards. Our line is looking really good, really strong. We could have them run straight and have our running back follow and it would be great. I’m hoping we can make it to the playoffs.”

Mollohan and the Wildcats open up with Jackson-Milton for the fifth season in a row and have lost each time so far, but that isn’t fazing Mollohan. He’s confident in his team and the skills they possess.

“This year is going to be great,” Mollohan said. “This is the best skill core we’ve had. Our line is very strong and is learning a lot more about their blocks and their job. They’re going to be really good. This is my senior year and I’m really looking forward to it because I grew up with a lot of these guys. They mean a lot to me and I hope this year is really good so we can be together a lot for our final year, because I don’t want to go out bad. They’re my family and I don’t want to end with bad memories with them.”
