Hubbard gets key conference win over Lakeview

HUBBARD — After losing in the continuation of a suspended game against Lakeview, 14-9, the Hubbard Eagles recovered to win the originally scheduled game against the Bulldogs, 5-1, in All-American Conference White Tier action Wednesday on the Eagles’ field.

Lakeview came out firing as they took an early lead. The Bulldogs’ (5-4, 4-1 AAC White) Justin Grove scored on a Brendan Kilpatrick single with the bases loaded. Lakeview was only able to score that one run with the bases loaded.

Hubbard (7-7, 5-4) recovered in the bottom half of the inning as it scored two runs in the inning. Jamie Thomson and Dom Hover reached on walks to start the inning. An RBI groundout by Tim Herberger scored Thomson and then an error scored Hover to make it 2-1.

“In the first game, there were some weird circumstances. We needed a good outing and Nick (Ferrara) gave it to us,” Hubbard coach John Schiraldi said. “I have a lot of faith in our guys. Ryan (Halavick) and Nick have been in the rotation for four years. I expect outings like that from them.”

After the first inning, Ferrara settled down as he held Lakeview scoreless for the rest of the game.

Hubbard got back to scoring in the bottom of the third inning. Thomson reached on a single to get it going. After a stolen base, Lukas Mosora singled to bring Thomson around to go up 3-1.

Mosora then scored a bit later on a single by Herberger to make Hubbard’s lead 4-1.

“I told them after the game that they hit the ball harder in this game than they have all season. I remember five or six hits that were just absolute shots,” Lakeview coach Mike Johnson said. “You just have to give Hubbard credit. They made some unbelievable plays. Their pitcher did a good job too.”

That he did as Ferrara went the distance while giving up just four hits with four strikeouts. He held the Lakeview lineup at bay for most of the night.

“It’s very important as a senior to be able to lead my guys to victory after unfortunately losing the first game. I pitched the first five or so innings in that game a few weeks ago,” Ferrara said. “It was nice to be able to come back and get the win in the second game.”

Thomson scored again in the bottom of the fourth inning for Hubbard as Mosora drove him in to set the final 5-1 score.
