Fitch third at D-I district

NORTH CANTON — Austintown Fitch placed third overall at the Division I Hoover District tournament and qualified four wrestlers for the state tournament.

The Falcons finished with 106 team points, trailing only Wadsworth and Massillon Perry. The top four individuals in each weight class advanced to the state tournament, which begins Thursday at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus.

Fitch’s Gus Sutton won the 126-pound title with a 2-0 victory over Jaivon Jones of Shaker Heights. Michael Ferree was second at 160 pounds, losing 3-2 in the finals. Colin Roberts was third at 106, Breylon Douglas took third at 195.

Boardman was the only other area to that competed but did not qualify any wrestlers.

PV places 5th, with 3 qualifiers

NORTH CANTON — Pymatuning Valley finished in the top five of the district tournament for the second straight year and has three state qualifiers.

The Lakers scored 79 team points at the district, where the top four individuals in each weight class advanced to the state tournament, which begins Thursday at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus.

Returning state champion Gaige Willis was the 220-pound champion. Willis, who is unbeaten over the last two seasons and 40-0 this year, beat Paul Skye of Mogadore, 6-5. Skye entered the match 41-0.

PV’s Jake Edelman was second at 113 pounds, and 285-pound Caleb Bean took fourth.

Garfield was the only other area team to advance a wrestler, with Logan Kisell taking first at 145 pounds, and Ryan Finney was third at 160. The G-Men placed eighth overall. Tuslaw won the tournament with 182.5 points. Rootstown was second with 143.5, and Waynedale was third with 128.
