Girard’s DelGarbino ends season with national title

A great season got even better for Girard’s Jack DelGarbino on Sunday.

The junior recently won the first individual state championship in school history, but he was just getting started. DelGarbino won the National High School Coaches Association championship Sunday — adding a national title to his spectacular year.

DelGarbino wrestled in the 285-pound junior division, where juniors from across the country compete for a national title. DelGarbino, who finished the high school regular season 49-0, beat Louden Haga of Parkersburg, W. Va., 8-6, in the finals. The championship earned him All-American honors as well.

He wasn’t the only area wrestler to place. Canfield’s David and Nick Crawford also earned the All-American distinction. David, a two-time state placer, finished in third place at 182 pounds in the senior division. Nick, a sophomore coming off a fifth-place finish at the state tournament, placed seventh at the NHSCA event.

They were the only area wrestlers to place in the top eight.
