Canfield leads Div. II

district at Alliance

ALLIANCE — Almost all of Canfield’s 13 district qualifiers are still competing as the Cardinals moved into first place after the first day of competition at the Division II Alliance district tournament on Friday.

Canfield has 79.5 team points, leading second-place Lake Catholic (66) and third-place CVCA (63) in the two-day, double-eliminaiton tournament. Wrestling continues at 9:30 a.m. today at Alliance High School.

Leading the way for the Cardinals are seven semifinalists — Ethan Fletcher (106), Ben Cutrer (160), Anthony D’Alesio (170), David Crawford (182), Nick Crawford (195), Tyler Stein (220) and Dan Kapalko (285).

Only two competitors were eliminated for the Cardinals, the returning district champion. Others who are still wrestling are Ronald Angelilli (120), McCoy Watkins (126), Eric El-Hayek (138) and David Reinhart (152).

Howland’s Brandon Matlock (220) and Chris Julian (285) each won their first two matches and are in today’s semifinals. The Tigers’ Isaiah Lyles (120) won his first match and lost his second.

Girard’s Jack DelGarbino reached the semifinals at 285 pounds. His younger brother, Alex DelGarbino, won his first match at 126 pounds and lost his second. Michael Belcik (160) won one and lost one. Hubbard’s Connor Burrus (106) lost his first and won his second.

Fitch third at Hoover

Division I district

NORTH CANTON — Austintown Fitch is third overall at the Division I Hoover district tournament, with four semifinalists.

Powering the Falcons are Zach Richards (106), Gus Sutton (126), Michael Ferree (160) and Breylon Douglas (195), who all won their first two matches and reached the semifinals. Fitch has 10 wrestlers taking part in the two-day, double-eliminaiton tournament, which did not hold a consolation round Friday. The tournament continues at 9 a.m. today.

Boardman has four wrestlers still competing. Wadsworth leads the district with 100 points. Massillon Perry is second with 64.5, while Fitch has 47.5.
