Mathews, Maplewood PV move to next round

¯ MATHEWS 60, ASHTABULA ST. JOHN 37: VIENNA — Mathews’ Sean McDivitt scored 29 points to power the Mustangs to a Division IV sectional first-round victory.

Mathews (13-10), which plays at Bristol on Friday, took a 16-6 first-quarter lead, with McDivitt scoring 11 in the frame. The Heralds cut into the lead by halftime, but Mathews outscored St. John, 34-20, in the final two quarters.

Ron Nejbauer paced the Heralds with 11 points.

¯ MAPLEWOOD 56, NEWBURY 50: MECCA — Maplewood held on to beat Newbury in a Division IV sectional first-round matchup.

The Rockets (9-14) led 27-16 at halftime, but the Black Knights charged back with a 19-11 advantage in the third quarter. Maplewood held an 18-15 edge in the fourth quarter to come out with the victory.

Jared Bedlion, Hunter Bates and Thomas Dorsey all scored 13 for Maplewood, which made 18 of 23 free throws. Tommy Rink added 10 points.

¯ PYMATUNING VALLEY 76, MINERAL RIDGE 66: ANDOVER — Trent Panak had a game-high 26 points as the Lakers pulled past the Rams in this Division III Warren District sectional first-round game.

Austin Roberts added 11 points, while Nick Sapp put in 10 for eighth-seeded Pymatuning Valley (12-10), which travels to top-seeded LaBrae on Friday for a sectional bracket final.

Koby Zupko and Maurice Clark each had 13 points for ninth-seeded Mineral Ridge (7-16), while Jordan Zupko added 12.
