Canfield wins easily in Division II

BELOIT — Canfield dominated the Division II West Branch sectional, scoring 274.5 team points and advancing 13 of 14 wrestlers to the district tournament.

The Cardinals secured seven titles and four runner-up finishes. Canfield’s sectional champs were Ethan Fletcher at 106 pounds, Ronald Angelilli at 120, Ben Cutrer at 160, Anthony D’Alesio at 170, David Crawford at 182, Nick Crawford at 195 and Tyler Stein at 220.

The top four placers at each weight class advance to the district tournament at Alliance High School, which begins Friday and concludes Saturday. Other qualifiers for the Cardinals were: Nick Barber (113, second), McCoy Watkins (126, second), Aidan Burcsak (132, second), David Reinhart (152, second), Eric El-Hayek (third, 138) and Daniel Kapalko (fourth, 285).

Girard was fifth overall with 101 points and had five wrestlers move on to next week. Jack DelGarbino took first at 285 pounds. Michael Belcik was second at 160, Alex DelGarbino took third at 126, Matt Belcik placed fourth at 132 and Joel McCracken finished fourth at 170.

Howland was sixth overall and had four wrestlers qualify. Isaiah Lyles (120) and Brandon Matlock (220) each came in second place, while Chris Julian (285) took third and Nick Mijavec placed fourth.

Poland had two wrestlers advance in Daniel Adams (third, 113) and Justice Smith (fourth, 160). Connor Burrus (third, 106) qualified for Hubbard.

Fitch runner-up in Division I

MASSILLON — Austintown Fitch placed second overall and crowned three champions at the Division I sectional wrestling tournament at Massillon Perry High School.

Colin Roberts (106 pounds), Gus Sutton (126) and Michael Ferree (160) each won their respective weight classes. The top four placers in each weight class advanced to the district tournament at Hoover High School, which starts Friday and concludes Saturday.

Other qualifiers for the Falcons were: Zach Richards (second, 132), Breylon Douglas (second, 195), Marc Judy (third, 113), Christian Davis (fourth, 138), Andrew Stehura (third, 182), Jacob Smail (fourth, 220) and Tyler Petrey (fourth, 285).

Boardman had five wrestlers advance. Derek Slipkovich placed second at 113 pounds, Anthony Baglama took third at 120, Nick Esmail finished fourth at 126, John Fleet took third at 152 and Kareem Hamden came in fourth place at 182.

Massillon Perry won the tournament with 225 points. Fitch was second at 203, and Massillon Jackson took third at 125.5.

PV takes second at Beachwood

BEACHWOOD — Pyamtuning Valley was the runner-up at the Division III Beachwood sectional, with three champions.

The Lakers scored 147.5 points to trail only Newbury’s 163.5. Garfield was third with 123. PV’s Jake Edelman (113), Noah Campbell (126) and Gaige Willis (195) each took first place. The top four finishers in each weight class advanced to the district tournament at Garfield Heights, which starts Friday and concludes Saturday.

Other qualifiers for the Lakers were: William Campbell (second, 120), Caleb Bean (second, 285) and Chad Brown (third, 152).

Garfield also crowned three champs, with Daniel Demma (106), Logan Kissel (145) and Ryan Finney (160) all taking first. Connor Hrubik (second, 152) and Logan Rutherford (fourth, 132) also moved on for the G-Men.

Grand Valley had six wrestlers qualify: Zach Hazlett (second, 182), Mason Shreve (second, 195), Chase Cottrell (second, 220), Trevor Meeker (third, 113), Mathew Sexton (fourth, 138) and Clayton Takacs (third, 160).

Brookfield’s Bryce Randall won the 182-pound title. John Webb (fourth, 120), Joe Hackett (third, 195) and Hunter Baumiller (fourth, 285) also advanced for the Warriors.
