Boardman boys finish 3rd in swimming sectional
Boardman’s boys swimming team finished third at Saturday’s Division I Canton swimming sectional with 338 points.
Massillon Jackson won with 373 points, while North Canton Hoover was second with 366.
The Spartans had a handful of sectional champions at the C.T. Branin Natatorium, which hosts the state meet in two weeks.
The strong foursome and arguably the best four swimmers in the area — Matthew DunLany, Noah Basista, Kyle Kimerer, Callen Aulizia — set a sectional record in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:10.94. The four took second in the 200 medley relay in 1:37.76.
The top two in each event automatically advance to next week’s district meet at Cleveland State University. The other top finishers in each event may make district action, but those qualifiers won’t be announced until today.
Kimerer won sectional titles in the 200 freestyle (1:43.46) and in the 100 butterfly (51.65), while DunLany was second in the butterfly (53.32). He was first in the 500 freestyle (4:54.55).
Boardman wasn’t the only automatic qualifiers Saturday.
Gia Direnzo of Austintown Fitch won the girls 100 butterfly (58.36), while taking third in the 100 backstroke (1:00.62). Her teammate, Jake Lawrence, was second in the boys 100 backstroke (54.97).
Basista was second in the 200 individual medley (1:58.09) and third in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.79). Aulizia was second in the 100 freestyle (47.18) and third in the 50 freestyle (21.26).
For the Spartan girls, Sarah Murray took third in the 500 freestyle (5:33.36), while 200 freestyle relay of Mikel Flatley, Alison Kuras, Alyssa Dinapoli, Jennah Markovitch was third (1:42.48).
At the Akron Sectional, Warren G. Harding’s Lydia Walls was eighth in the girls 50 freestyle (25.14) and ninth in the 100 butterfly (1:02.39).
The Raiders boys 400 freestyle relay of Brendan Leecue, Joseph Criazzo, Tino DiCenso, Ty Fowler was eighth (3:44.57).
