State dual team wrestling tourney begins on Wednesday
Area wrestling teams, along with those throughout Ohio, begin their quest for a state championship on Wednesday with the start of the Ohio High School Athletic Association dual team tournament.
The tournament, now in its sixth year, differs from traditional wrestling tournaments in which wrestlers accumulate points for their team as they advance through their weight class.
The dual team tournament is a single-elimination tournament in which teams compete in a dual match format.
The state divides all three classes into eight regions and eight regional champions descend on Columbus Feb. 11 for the state quarterfinals, semifinals and finals.
The regional tournaments take two weeks to complete. This week, the round of 16 and quarterfinals are held, along with any necessary preliminary rounds. Next week, Jan. 31, the regional semifinals and finals will be wrestled.
Locally, Canfield is seeded first in Region 12-B. The Cardinals compete Wednesday at Girard with (in order of seed) Girard, West Branch, Hubbard, Jefferson, Howland, Geneva and Conneaut. Two teams will advance to the regional semifinals at a site yet to be determined.
The top seeds in Region 12-A are Beaver Local, Louisville, Alliance and Minerva. The A sub-region also will send two teams to the regional semifinals.
In Division I, the Region 4-B lower brackets will be wrestled at Austintown Fitch with the top-seeded Falcons facing Green and third-seeded Boardman going against Uniontown Lake. The winners wrestle for a berth in the regional semifinals at a site to be determined.
The upper bracket in Region 4-B, competing at Canton McKinley, includes Carrollton, North Canton Hoover, Dover and Canton McKinley. Region 4-A includes Massillon Perry, Massillon Jackson, Mount Vernon, Wooster and others.
Area Division III schools are competing Wednesday at two different sites.
Liberty, Grand Valley and Garfield will compete at Garfield in the Region 20-A upper bracket. Crestwood is the top seed in that competition and Ashtabula Edgewood is seeded second.
Pymatuning Valley is the top seed at the 20-A lower bracket competition at Newbury. The Lakers are grouped with Berkshire, Newbury and Hawken.
