Seeded tennis teams win
The top seeds were victorious Thursday in the finals of the Division II girls tennis sectional tournament at Boardman High School.
John F. Kennedy’s duo of Kaytlin Marlatt and Lauren Kraker defeated Isabella Francisco and Hannah Matthews of Cardinal Mooney, 6-0, 7-5, in the championship doubles match. Poland’s Marisa Ricciardi topped second-seeded Anna Garvin of Lakeview, 6-0, 6-2.
In the consolation matches, Caitlyn Condoleon and Sophia Zamarelli of JFK beat Julia Giamboli and Jessica DiDomenico of Mooney, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. In singles, Lexie Tsudis of Ursuline defeated teammate Vy Hoang, 7-5, 6-2.
All four semifinalists in both singles and doubles have qualified for next week’s district tournament at Springside Racquet & Fitness Club in Akron.
In the Division I sectional at Shaker Heights, Howland’s doubles team of Francesca Elisco and Kate Li won three matches this week before seeing their season end in the quarterfinal round.
Elisco and Li beat Brenna McWreath and Kaitie Kinney of Lakeside, 6-1, 6-1; Emma Lammermeier and Andreanna Zaveri of Willoughby South, 6-0, 6-4; and Kelsey Merryman and Alyssa Connors of Mentor, 6-1, 6-2.
The Howland duo then lost, 6-1, 6-3, to second-seeded Maggie Yang and Alexis Ratner of Solon in the quarterfinals.
