Grand Valley, Windham roll
¯ Grand Valley 62, Pymatuning Valley 6: ORWELL — The Grand Valley Mustangs (8-0, 4-0) remained undefeated with a convincing win over the Pymatuning Valley Lakers (2-6, 1-2) who couldn’t get anywhere near GV.
GV’s Eduardo Hernandez ran for 135 yards with four touchdowns. Grand Valley scored all of its touchdowns on the ground. Quarterback Michael McGovern ran in three of his own touchdowns on the night with 79 rushing yards. He also threw for 130 yards.
For PV, Jacob Chiles ran for 37 yards on just four carries. Quarterback Logan Drnek threw 75 yards. The only Lakers’ score came on a Gaige Willis 1-yard run. GV gained 456 total yards compared to PV’s 123 total yards.
¯ Windham 54, Newbury 22: NEWBURY — The Windham Bombers (6-2, 2-1) used their ground game for the win. With 343 rushing yards, the Newbury Black Knights (4-4, 1-2) were unable to defend the Bombers well.
Phillip Maiorca led the way for Windham as he ran 153 yards with two touchdowns. Windham’s Blaze Angle threw for 200 yards on just six completions with two touchdowns.
For Newbury, Johnny Chambers led the way as he was the offense. He threw for 104 yards and ran for 100 yards. He was resposible for all three Black Knights’ touchdowns.
Widnham led the game at halftime due to three touchdowns being scored in the last 58 seconds of the half. Newbury shot itself in the foot with four fumbles and an interception. Windham gained almost 550 total yards to just 259 yards for Newbury.
¯ AUSTINTOWN FITCH 20, ERIE McDOWELL 0: ERIE, Pa. — A steady running game powered Austintown Fitch to a non-conference victory over Erie McDowell (Pa.).
The Falcons (5-3) ran 51 times for 257 yards and three touchdowns. Joey Zielinski led the way with 112 yards and two TDs on 17 carries. Randy Smith added 90 yards on 18 carries, and Jakari Lumsden provided 43 yards and one TD on 11 attempts. Lumsden started the scoring with a 2-yard run in the second quarter. Zielinski added a 1-yard TD in the third quarter, and Zielinski scored once more on an 11-yard TD in the fourth.
Fitch’s defense forced three turnovers in the shutout, picking off two passes and recovering a fumble.
