Lakeview teams lead D-II track district

CORTLAND — The Lakeview Bulldogs boys took a 32-17 lead over second-place Garfield after the first day of competition Thursday at the Division II Lakeview District track and field meet at Don Richards Memorial Stadium.

The Lakeview girls have a slight edge on Crestwood, 29-22.5. The Bulldogs girls 4×800 team beat their seed time by more than 20 seconds in winning that event. Seniors Cammie Becker, Tiffany Vega and Leanna Hyatt teamed with freshman Isabella Kakiou to run a 10:15.80.

Lakeview’s Joe Gomez led off the boys by going 10 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault. He won with fewer misses. Girard’s 4×800 relay of Mike Belcik, Derek Basinger, Kenny Walters and Riley Drennen won in a time of 8:36.31. Champion’s Noah Bayus went 21-9 in the long jump to capture a district crown. Cardinal Mooney’s Autumn Desantis won the girls high jump (5-2), while Grand Valley’s Allie Holmes went 8-0 to take first in the pole vault. The top four in each final advance to next week’s Austintown Fitch Regional.

Other area regional qualifiers are: boys 4×800 relay – Lakeview, Champion and LaBrae; boys discus – Cardinal Mooney’s Michael DiRienzo; boys long jump – Garfield’s Seth Morgan, Lakeview’s Tannor Drum; boys pole vault – Grand Valley’s Jacob Glavickas and Michael McGovern, along with Lakeview’s Max McLeod; girls 4×800 relay – Girard; girls high jump – Jones, Lakeview’s Abby Langmeyer; girls poke vault – Lakeview’s Emma Churley and Alyssa Godfrey. The meet resumes Saturday, starting at 10 a.m.
