Canfield’s Cianciola alive at district
AKRON — Canfield tennis player Tim Cianciola advanced to the quarterfinals Thursday of the Division I district tournament at Akron’s Springside Racquet & Fitness Club, before being bounced in two sets. However, Cianciola still has an opportunity to qualify for state out of the consolation bracket, as Division I takes six tennis players to Mason next week. Cianciola, a junior who was the No. 1-seed out of the Canton sectional, defeated Cleveland St. Ignatius senior Andy Siciliano in the first round, 6-1, 6-1. However, Cianciola was then knocked out of the quarterfinal round by Vlad Rotnov of Solon, 6-0, 6-0.
Cianciola will face Highland’s Isaac Hadler Saturday in a consolation match. Brecksville’s Aaron Yeh and Uniontown Lake’s Dawson Drummond will face off in the other consolation match. The two winners will be assured a spot at the state tournament, and the two will then play for fifth- and sixth-places.
In doubles, Canfield’s Bobby Long and Sirin Nalluri were beaten in the first round by Parker Benning and Sam Cohen of Kenston, 6-7, 6-1, 6-2, and Dylan Todd and Rajan Taneja lost to Richie Hofstra and Brian Zhu of St. Ignatius, 6-1, 6-3.
