Wrestlers take first steps today

The opening stretch of high school wrestling’s postseason begins today at various locations across the state.

The top four individuals at each weight class of the sectional tournament advance to next weekend’s district event, where the top four again move on — this time to the Jerome Schottenstein Center in Columbus for the state tournament.

In Division I, Austintown Fitch and Boardman are part of the Kenston sectional. Wrestling starts at 9:30 a.m., today at Kenston High School. Qualifiers advance to the North Canton Hoover district, which begins next Friday and concludes Saturday.

In Division II, Canfield, Girard, Howland, Hubbard, Poland and Southeast are part of the 10-team sectional at West Branch High School. Canfield, last year’s Division II state runner-up, is the returning sectional champion. Wrestling starts at 10 a.m., today and the top four move on to the Alliance district, which also runs next Friday and Saturday.

The Division III Rootstown sectional starts at 10 a.m., with Liberty, Jackson-Milton and South Range taking part. Also in Division III, Brookfield, Cardinal, Garrettsville Garfield, Grand Valley and Pymatuning Valley are in the Beachwood sectional, where wrestling begins at 10 a.m. The winners of both Division III sectionals move on to the Garfield Heights district the following Friday and Saturday.

The state tournament begins March 9 and concludes March 11.
