Fitch senior leads area state meet qualifiers

A handful of automatic qualifiers will be joined by several more at-large qualifiers at the state swimming and diving championships this week at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton.

Austintown Fitch senior Timothy Kubacki on Saturday won the Division I district title at Cleveland State University in the 100 backstroke. His time of 50.69 seconds ended up as the fourth-best among state qualifiers.

He also qualified automatically in the 200 individual medley by finishing second at Cleveland. That time of 1:52.79 is the seventh-best qualifying time in the state.

Boardman freshman Noah Basista finished seventh in that event, but his time was good enough to be the 24th and final state qualifier.

Basista qualified automatically in the 100 breaststroke by finishing second at Cleveland, but his time of 58.73 is the 19th best among qualifiers.

Two other Boardman swimmers were at-large state qualifiers. Callen Aulizia, a junior, finished third in the 50 freestyle at Cleveland, and his time of 20.76 is the third-best among state qualifiers. He placed fifth in the 100 freestyle and is the eight-best qualifier.

Junior Kyle Kimerer placed fifth in the 100 butterfly and qualified for state with the 18th-fastest time.

The foursome of Basista, Kimerer, Aulizia and Matthew DunLany placed second at district in both the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay. The medley relay has the fourth-best qualifying time in the state and the 400 free relay time is seventh-best.

In Division II, the Canfield boys relay team of Lake Bennett, Kamran Sarac, Cullen Brady and Bobby Kutsch finished third in the district in both the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 freestyle relay.

The 200 time is fifth among state qualifiers and the 400 time has the Cardinals ranked eighth.

In addition, Brady is the 24th qualifier in the 100 freestyle with his seventh place finish at district.
