Harding’s Culver out for season

WARREN — Warren G. Harding senior and West Virginia University-recruit Derek Culver will not finish his final season with the Raiders.

Harding coach Andy Vlajkovich said Culver, a 6-foot-10 center, “will not be with the program for the remainder of the season.” Vlajkovich repeated the line several times when asked to elaborate on the situation.

A source close to the team, who asked to remain anonymous because of the sensitivity of the subject, said Culver is academically ineligible. Culver missed other games this year — once for missing school — and didn’t start a few contests for undisclosed reasons.

“I’m not going to discuss the matter any further,” said Vlajkovich when pressed on why Culver is no longer with the team.

Vlajkovich also was unaware of how Culver’s scholarship might be affected by the news. Culver was considered a four-star player, according to Rivals.com and 247sports.com, and the No. 1 basketball recruit in Ohio, according to Rivals.

Culver was averaging 14 points, eight rebounds and nearly two blocks per game this season. For his career, Culver finished with exactly 1,000 points, the third most of any player since Harding consolidated with Western Reserve in 1990, and 692 rebounds (second most).
