Cleveland Heights defeats WGH

BEREA — Warren G. Harding’s boys basketball team was tested once again — this time it was against an improved Cleveland Heights team.

The Tigers surged ahead 19-9 in the third quarter and held on for a 69-64 victory at Sunday’s Scholastic Play by Play Classic at Baldwin Wallace University. Cleveland Heights led the entire second half.

The Raiders usual suspects — Lynn Bowden and Derek Culver (West Virginia recruit) — led WGH (4-6) with 17 and 16 points, respectively.

Harding led 36-34 at halftime before Cleveland Heights (7-2) pulled away. This Tigers team, which was 7-14 last season, beat St. Ignatius and Cornerstone Christian, the defending Division IV state champion, this season. The Raiders were edged by St. Ignatius last month.

Tiyrn Frank and Lynn Williams were on the cusp of double figures with nine points each.

Cleveland Heights’ Yahel Hill led all scorers with 30 points, while Grayson Green and Jaylen Harris each had 13. Keith Jackson added 11.

Friday, Harding (4-6) tries to break a two-game losing streak and avenge a season-opening loss Friday as the Raiders host All-American Conference, Red Tier rival Boardman. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.
