Tennis, golf athletes face district and state competition
Fresh off a district title last week, the Brookfield Warriors boys golf team is ready for the Division III state tournament Friday and Saturday at the NorthStar Golf Club in Sunbury.
The Brookfield team, coached by Larry Smoot, includes Conner Stevens, Justin Atkinson, Bryce Schell, Nate Smoot and Jake Bower. They outscored Columbiana, 325-327, to win the district last week at Tannenhauf Golf Club in Alliance.
Brookfield’s team will be joined by John F. Kennedy sophomore Jimmy Graham, who qualified as an individual at the district.
Meanwhile, Poland’s girls golf team plays in the Division II state tournament also Friday and Saturday, but at the Ohio State University Gray Course in Columbus.
The Bulldog team, which finished third last week at the district meet, includes Gina Ungaro, Jenna Jacobsen, Marlie McConnell, Elena Cammack and Carly Ungaro.
The Division I state golf tournaments are scheduled Oct. 21-22 at the Ohio State University Scarlet (boys) and Gray (girls) courses.
Boardman’s team of Brian Terlesky, Cade Kreps, Cole Christman, Bobby Jonda and Bryan Kordupel qualified on the boys’ side. In the girls tournament, Boardman’s Jacinta Pikunas and Canfield’s Hannah Keffler qualified as individuals.
In girls tennis, area competitors will play this weekend in the district tournament at Springside Racquet & Fitness Club in Akron. The top six finishers there in Division I and the top four in Division II advance to the state tournament Oct. 21-22 in Mason.
First and second-round Division I matches are scheduled today. Area girls competing are Howland’s Isabella Elisco and Canfield’s Emily Hofsess in singles, and the Canfield doubles team of Hannah Cianciola and Sydney Cianciola. The Cianciolas won the sectional tournament last week at Canton.
Division II starts Friday with the first and second rounds. In action in singles are last week’s sectional champion Kaytlin Marlatt of John F. Kennedy, Lakeview’s Laura Garvin and Lexi Tsudis of Ursuline.
In doubles, sectional champs Marissa Ricciardi and Audrey Schweers of Poland will be joined by Caitlyn Condoleon and Paras Kontos of JFK, Lauren Paczak and Anna Garvin of Lakeview and Hannah Matthews and Isabella Francisco of Cardinal Mooney.
Saturday’s competition is billed as Championship Saturday and will include semifinals in both Divsion I and II, plus 5th- and 6th-place playoff matches in Division I.
Action starts at 9 a.m. today and Friday and at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.
