Lakeview girls grab 2nd place in district

BAZETTA — A Lakeview parent beckoned from the crowd behind the celebratory Bulldogs girls cross country team.

“Can we get a team picture with the pancakes?”

Tiffany Daley, who owns Breakfast at Tiffany’s restaurant in Sharpsville, Pa., brought three boxes of fluffy, oversized breakfast treats glazed and coated with a variety of substances.

She’s brought those for her niece, Tiffany Vega, and her teammates after the last couple of meets.

The Bulldog girls had those delectables after their team finished as the runner-up in Saturday’s Division II Trumbull County District Meet at the Trumbull County Fairgrounds — behind champion Poland.

“There’s trail mix on it, so it’s not that bad for you,” said Vega, who led Lakeview with a sixth-place finish. “It tastes good, that’s all that matters.”

Before the pancakes, the girls were proudly holding the plaque, honoring their accomplishment.

“Everything we’ve been working on throughout this year has been working to get us to this point and get us to regionals once again as a team,” said coach Jason Senedak, whose team had 78 points.

Poland won with 59 points, led by Maggie Sebest, who won the individual title.

“It’s an awesome feeling to qualify for regionals as a team, and a really great feeling individually to win the race,” Sebest said.

So was making the most of muddy conditions at the Trumbull County Fairgrounds.

Lakeview’s Cammie Becker, who finished seventh, said her teammates embraced the mushy course. The mud splattered all over their uniforms, shoes and hair during the race.

“We all had fun in the mud today,” Becker said. “We put mud on our face before we went out.”

Lakeview returns to regional action and hopes to run well at next weekend’s regional at Boardman High School.

The top four teams and 16 runners advanced to Boardman out of Division II.

“No matter what these girls do, I know I’m going to be proud of them,” Senedak said. “They’re going to be proud of themselves. No matter what happens, we’re going to be alright.

“Maybe we can do something crazy. I wouldn’t put it past these girls to knock off a phenomenal time.”

FIRST-TIME OUT: Howland’s girls cross country team advanced to regional action for the first time in school history, taking third (84 points) in Division II.

The Tigers were led by freshman Maria Dellimuti, who took third.

“It feels amazing,” Dellimuti said. “I tried staying with the top group. When I couldn’t, I tried falling back to get a good time and tried my best until the end.”

DIVISION II BOYS: Poland (second, 105 points), Lakeview (fourth, 132) and LaBrae (sixth, 185) all advanced out of the Division II boys district.

The top six teams and 24 runners move on to Boardman.

DIVISION I BOYS: The Howland and Boardman boys teams battled last week as the Tigers edged the Spartans by two at the Sim Earich Invitational.

On Saturday, Howland and Boardman both advanced to regional action by taking fourth (141) and fifth (143), respectively.

The top five teams and 20 runners advanced out of Division I boys districts.

Boardman’s Chris Butler led the Spartans with a fifth-place finish.

“It gave us an idea what we needed to do to execute the plan,” he said of Sim Earich and advancing to regionals.

Vinny Mauri paced Howland with a sixth-place finish.

“It’s a really big accomplishment,” he said. “We’ve been thinking about it all year.”
