District semifinal battles begin today

Area fall sports teams begin the district level of postseason play this week after surviving the sectional level last week.

All area teams that earned number one seeds before tournament play began remain alive. Those teams include Lakeview’s boys and girls soccer teams in Division II, Champion’s girls soccer in Division III, Newton Falls volleyball in Division III, Lordstown boys soccer in Division III and Cardinal Mooney girls soccer in Division III.

District semifinals begin today in volleyball and girls soccer. In the volleyball tournament at LaBrae, top-seeded Newton Falls faces fourth-seeded Berkshire after third-seeded Garfield and fifth-seeded Grand Valley face off at 5:30 p.m.

In Division IV at Lakeview, Mathews, the three seed, faces top-seeded Ashtabula St. John at 5 p.m., followed by No. 2 Lordstown vs. No. 4 Bristol.

On the soccer pitch, top-seeded Lakeview plays host to fifth-seeded Hubbard in Division II, and second-seeded Howland is at home against third-seeded Niles, the defending district champion. Both games are scheduled at 7 p.m.

In the Division III Kent District, the games are No. 5 LaBrae at top-seeded Champion, and No. 3 Newton Falls at No. 2 Rootstown.

In the Austintown District, top-seeded Cardinal Mooney hosts St. Thomas Aquinas and No. 3 Ursuline is at home against No. 4 Canton Central Catholic.
