Spartans stun Mooney with wild comeback
YOUNGSTOWN – Boardman scored twice in the final five minutes to stun the Cardinals, 28-26.
After Koby Adu Poku scored on a 2-yard run to cut Mooney’s lead to 26-21, the Spartans recovered an onside kick. They then drove to the 4-yard line with 19 seconds left, and quarterback Mike O’Horo hit Travis Koontz, who made a leaping catch over two defenders for the game-winning score.
The Spartans outscored the Cardinals 21-12 in the second half to earn the win. O’Horo was responsible for three touchdowns.
He went 11-for-15 for 201 yards and a pair of touchdown tosses, plus, he added an 8-yard touchdown run. Austin Barone caught a 73-yard touchdown pass to give Boardman an early lead. He finished with 97 receiving yards.
Mooney allowed just 59 rushing yards on 33 attempts, yet came up short. Ray Anderson rushed for 61 yards and caught a 76-yard touchdown pass from Antonio Page.
URSULINE 40, EAST 16: YOUNGSTOWN – The Irish held East to negative yardage on the ground in the 24-point win. East had more penalty yards (75) than total yards (64) in the loss.
Joe Floyd had 14 rushes for 68 yards, including a 16-yard touchdown run. The Irish rushed for three touchdowns, with two of them coming from Mario Fusillo. For East, Thomas Steele threw for 65 yards, while Michael Lawrence rushed for 35 yards and a score.
GARFIELD 48, BERKSHIRE 0: GARRETTSVILLE – The G-Men (2-0) rumbled past Berkshire (1-1) behind Kyle Borrelli who rushed for 106 yards and two touchdowns.
Dalton Fall passed for 118 yards and Anthony Denigris ran for a score and caught a touchdown pass.
KIRTLAND 29, GRAND VALLEY 7: KIRTLAND – The Hornets, last year’s Division VI state champions, had one blip on their schedule – the Mustangs.
Grand Valley pulled off a 30-21 stunning upset in Week 2 last season.
Not this year.
Torok had six carries for 80 yards and two touchdowns as Kirtland (2-0) stung the Mustangs this time around.
Hernandez had 15 carries for 34 yards and Reichek’s fourth-quarter score avoided the shutout as Grand Valley drops to 0-2.
CARDINAL 27, PYMATUNING VALLEY 6: MIDDLEFIELD – The Lakers couldn’t overcome a 405-yard rushing night by the Huskies (1-1).
Gaige Willis gained 54 yards on the ground for the Lakers (1-1) and Luke Hockran added 49.
Trey Shirkey ran for 161 yards and a game-clinching 73-yard touchdown for Cardinal, and Kyle Simms had 124 yards and three touchdowns.
WINDHAM 28, LOWELLVILLE 6: WINDHAM – Jamario Brown had two scores to lead the Bombers past the Rockets. Brown had 11 carries for 66 yards.
Hunter Shackleford led Windham (1-1) with 18 carries for 110 yards. The Bombers had 255 total rushing yards.
Lowellville (0-2) was held to 49 yards rushing.
MATHEWS 43, LEETONIA 0: LEETONIA – The Mustangs held a 16-point halftime lead, but broke the game open with a 12-point third quarter.
Mathews (2-0) added 15 points in the final stanza.
Leetonia drops to 0-2.
