Lakeview boys move on in D-II
The Lakeview boys golf team advances to Division II district tournament play next week, as they finished third in sectionals on Monday.
The sectional tournament, played at Ravenna’s Windmill Lakes Golf Course in Ravenna, will also be the site of the Oct. 4 district tournament.
“The conditions on the front nine didn’t get real bad, but I’d say the middle of the back nine is when things got rough,” Lakeview coach Steve Woofter explained of the challenges of playing in Monday’s rainy conditions. “Windmill is a tough course, and I’d say our guys golfed right around their averages.”
The Bulldogs snuck in as the final team to advance to districts, as their four golfers combined for a score of 336, placing them behind Cardinal Mooney (323) and Ursuline (333). Preston Sheets, the team’s No. 1 golfer, scored a 76, which placed him second behind Mooney’s Ken Keller (72).
However, the top three individual scorers on non-qualifying teams advance to districts, which means Garfield’s Derek Miller, who tied for fourth with a 79, will advance. He’ll be joined by Rootstown’s Laszlo Horvath (80) and LaBrae’s Zack Morris, who won on the No. 3 playoff hole over Champion’s Jared Zigarovich, to advance with an 82.
As for next week, Woofter knows the challenges that lie ahead, and he believes that a second Bulldog golfer will have to shoot in the 70’s, along with Sheets.
“We have four juniors and a sophomore (No. 2 golfer Anthony Innocenzi) and these guys have been pretty much playing together for two years,” Woofter explained.
“We’ll have to do a little bit better than we did today, if we want to advance past districts. We knew that we’d have a tough one today with Mooney, Ursuline and Girard, and luckily, we were able to beat out Girard and advance. We’ll see about next week, but underdogs can win sometimes too.”
