Raiders shock McDonald with wild 4th

NORTH LIMA – The Blue Devils held an 11-point lead heading into the final quarter but could not hold on against the Raiders as South Range pulled away for a 24-14 victory.

Mike Zarbaugh scored second-quarter touchdowns for McDonald on a 4-yard run and a 14-yard pass from Dylan Portolese.

South Range cut the lead to 14-9 with 9:08 left in the game, then a 2-yard scoring run and the ensuing two-point conversion put the Raiders ahead, 17-14, with 4:44 remaining. They scored again with 2:22 remaining.

Joe Celli led McDonald’s rushing game with 37 yards on 10 carries. He also caught three passes for 21 yards. Portolese completed five of 11 pass attempts for 41 yards.

MATHEWS 49, ST. JOHN 6: VIENNA – Mathews defense was more than stingy as it held visiting St. John to minus-25 yards – including 17 carries for minus-28 yards.

The Mustangs (1-0) had 33 carries for 302 yards – including Daniel Canter’s seven carries for 108 yards.

St. John (0-1) was 3-of-17 passing for 46 yards.

Dillon Canter was 9-of-17 for 154 yards – most to Chris Ritz, who two catches for 93 yards.

COLUMBIANA 63, WESTERN RESERVE 52: BERLIN CENTER – A back and forth shootout included 42 Columbiana second half points. Western Reserve, who led by double-digits for most of the first three quarters, were shutout in the fourth quarter.

Columbiana (1-0) quarterback Mitch Davidson put on a show, going 14-for-19 with 205 yards and three touchdown passes, plus, 157 rushing yards and four more touchdowns. Tanner Pearl had 103 rushing yards on eight carries and a score.

Western Reserve (0-1) had three rushers with over 100 yards on the ground, including Austin Seifert (144), Jack Cappabianca (140) and Wyatt Larimer (123). The Blue Devils gained 624 total yards of offensive, compared to the Clippers’ 465.

CHAMPION 42, WATERLOO 27: ATWATER – Brandon Allen threw for 344 yards and five touchdowns to help Champion pull away from Waterloo in a non-conference shootout.

Champoin took a 34-13 lead early in the fourth quarter, but the Vikings scored two quick touchdowns to pull within 34-27. Allen added a sixth TD with a 40-yard run that sealed the victory with 2 minutes, 15 seconds left.

Noah Bayus caught seven passes for 176 yards and two TDs for Champion. He had touchdown catches of 75 and 62 yards. Carter Mast added 71 yards on two catches, including a 45-yard TD.

Waterloo’s ill Bolanz threw two touchdowns and ran for two more.

GRAND VALLEY 19, JEFFERSON 7: JEFFERSON – Grand Valley outscored the Falcons, 13-0, in the second half and rode a 163-yard rushing effort from Eduardo Hernandez to beat its neighborhood rival.

Hernandez put the Mustangs ahead for good, 12-7, with a 10-yard scoring run in the third quarter. Michael McGovern then hit Cody Osburn with a 28-yard scoring pass in the fourth quarter to clinch the win.

McGovern had tallied GV’s first touchdown, a 44-yard run in the first quarter. He finished with 71 yards rushing and 50 yards passing.

HUBBARD 20, BAY 0: BAY VILLAGE – Hubbard held Bay to 97 total yards and shut out the Rockets in a non-conference clash.

The Eagles held a 7-0 lead through the first three quarters and pulled away in the fourth. Rafeal Moralas started the scoring with a 4-yard run early in the second quarter. The game stayed 7-0 until the fourth, when Tyreq Moorer scampered 42 yards for TD and a 13-0 Hubbard lead (the kick was missed).

Moorer finished the scoring with a 4-yard TD run. The Eagles held Bay to 34 yards rushing on 35 carries. They also had an interception.

Hubbard hosts Girard on Friday.
