Saturday’s roundup

JFK doubles, POLAND’S Eckman don’t advance: CANTON – John F. Kennedy’s team of Maria Stroup and Ellie Cole lost to Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin’s Andreja Didovic and Mary Kus in Saturday’s Division II girls district tennis tournament at Harvard Park to have a chance to move on to state by scores of 6-1, 6-2.

Didovic and Kus then beat a team from Laurel to clinch the fifth and final doubles spot to state.

“We played very well, but just could not finish points,” Kennedy coach Joe Marino said. “We had an awesome season considering we shared Ellie with the soccer team. Maria Stroup was phenomenal the entire tournament. They will be very strong next year. Plus, we will be picking up Kaytlin Marlatt, a very powerful eighth grader.”

On the singles side, Poland’s Elise Eckman beat Canton Central Catholic’s Bella Sirpilla in her first match, 6-4, 6-3, but lost her fifth-place match to Orange’s Anjali Kashyap, 6-1, 6-3, as Kashyap captures the last singles spot to state.

AUSTINTOWN FITCH 30, EAST 14: YOUNGSTOWN – The Falcons jumped out to a 23-point lead and held on for a win over the Panthers on Saturday.

Running back Tyler Hewlitt accounted for Fitch’s two first-half touchdowns, while quarterback Antwan Harris ran and threw a pass in the second half to seal the win for the Falcons (6-1). Harris finished the night 6 of 16 passing for 106 yards, with four passes and 83 yards going to Earl Scott.

East (1-6) did make things interesting in the fourth quarter when it pulled to within nine points with 1:59 remaining in the game, but that was as close as the Panthers got. Jawlen Shaw paced East with 72 yards on 20 carries and recorded a 3-yard touchdown.

Fitch’s next scheduled game is at Erie McDowell on Oct. 24, while East hosts Ursuline Friday.
