Poland’s Gardner qualifies for state

Tribune Chronicle

Friday proved to be a rough day for local players in the Division II tennis tournament at Harvard Park in Canton.

The only area player to advance to Saturday’s seeding round for the state tournament was Poland’s Garrett Gardner. The top seed from the Youngstown sectional defeated Justin Bober of Hoban and Weston Noall of Gilmour Academy. He faces University School’s Rob Stroup today to earn his seed for next weekend’s state tournament.

Lakeview’s Aaron Paczak, the second seed from Youngstown, won his first match against Dakota Thomas of Orrville, 6-0, 6-2. However, he was then swept by Sid Ahuja of Hawken, 6-0, 6-0.

Also winning their first round but falling short of the state tournament was the John F. Kennedy doubles team of Tyler Cole and John Nader. The duo defeated Carl Icsman and Marko Horattas of Hoban, 6-1, 6-0. In the second round, the two battled back to force a third set, but ultimately lost to Beachwood’s Brett Dubin and Karan Gill. The scores were 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-3.

The top four singles and doubles players qualified for the state tournament and play at 9 a.m. today at Harvard Courts in Canton for seeds.
