LaBrae rallies to clinch AAC Blue title
GIRARD — LaBrae overcame an early 21-0 deficit and went on to a 48-32 win at Girard clinching the All-American Conference Blue Tier championship.
The Vikings, who had both an interception return and a kick return for a touchdown in the game, also clinched a playoff berth, according to the web site www.joeeitel.com. The Vikings (7-2, 6-0 AAC Blue) stand third in the Division V, Region 17 standings.
Arjay Oliver rushed for a touchdown and caught a pass for another, as he led the team with 158 yards on the ground. Walton Allie had an 86-yard kick return touchdown, while Tariq Drake added a pick-6.
Girard (2-7, 2-3) built a three-touchdown lead early, as Mark Waid ran for a pair of scores. Waid led the team on the ground and through the air, rushing for 61 yards and throwing for 340.
LIBERTY 20, NEWTON FALLS 14: NEWTON FALLS — A late 81-yard touchdown run by Dra Rushton sealed an important victory for the Leopards.
Liberty (5-4, 4-1 AAC Blue) entered the game in the eighth spot in Division V, Region 17 and actually fell one spot to No. 9 despite the victory. The Leopards need to beat Girard in Week 10 to have a shot at the postseason.
Rushton’s 81-yard run gave Liberty a 20-8 lead, but Newton Falls (2-7, 0-5) responded with a 10-yard TD run by Bill Wright to cut the lead to the final score. The Tigers drove to the Liberty 28 with less than a minute to play, but on fourth-and-5, the Leopards’ Simi Moananu forced and recovered a fumble to finish off Falls.
Rushton ran for 76 yards and two TDs on 12 carries. Capone Haywood paced the Leopards with 89 yards on one carry. Jalen McKinney added 61 yards on six carries and 50 yards for a TD.
The Tigers ran the ball 68 times for 247 yards, led by Wright, who had a game-high 156 yards on 36 carries.
HUBBARD 17, POLAND 7: POLAND — Hubbard trailed in the game 7-3 after three quarters, but two Davion Daniels scores in the final stanza put the Eagles up for good.
Hubbard held Poland to five first downs and 16 carries for 15 yards, while the Eagles had 14 first downs and 57 carries for 266 yards — led by Rafael Morales (25 carries for 140 yards).
Hubbard (7-2, 5-1 All-American Conference, White Tier) had three drives stall inside the 5, but that led to Poland (4-5, 3-3) starting two of its drives at the 1.
The Eagles, who stand sixth in Division IV, Region 11, finish the regular season with Youngstown East.
NILES 32, JEFFERSON 20: NILES — Niles scored 14 second-quarter points and was able to hang on as it snapped a four-game losing streak, outrushing Jefferson by 66 yards.
Niles (4-5, 2-3 AAC White Tier) was led by Robbie Savin’s 173 rushing yards. Savin ran for two scores, while Tyler Srbinovich ran for one and threw for 105 yards. Bruce Guy caught two passes for 44 yards.
Jefferson (4-5, 2-4) was held scoreless until the third quarter. Jeremiah Knight snapped his streak of 200-plus yards rushing games, as he ran for 126 yards on 17 attempts. JJ Henson threw for 107 yards.
BROOKFIELD 22, CAMPBELL 7: BROOKFIELD — Brookfield ran for 260 yards and sealed an AAC Blue Tier win with a late fourth-quarter touchdown against Campbell.
The Warriors (6-3, 3-2) led 14-7 and put the game away when Xavier Bailey scored on a 22-yard run with 1:29 left in the game. Bailey led all rushers with 185 yards and two TDs on 21 carries. Alex Clark added 60 yards and one TD on 15 carries.
Brookfield also held Campbell (3-6, 1-4) to 193 total yards. Yianni Koullias paced the Red Devils with 57 yards on 18 carries. He put Campbell ahead, 7-6, in the first quarter on a 12-yard TD run. Clark put Brookfield back ahead in the second quarter with a 1-yard plunge.
AUSTINTOWN FITCH 12, BOARDMAN 7: AUSTINTOWN — Austintown Fitch won a defensive battle over crosstown rival Boardman in an AAC Gold Tier clash.
The Falcons (5-4, 2-1) held Boardman to 161 total yards. They also blocked a punt that caromed out of the end zone for a safety in the third quarter. That gave Fitch a 9-7 lead. Dylan Correia added a 30-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.
Joey Zielinski led the Falcons with 89 yards on 19 carries. Randy Smith added 65 yards and one touchdown on 23 carries.
Koby Adu-Poku rushed for a game-high 110 yards, including a 1-yard TD, on 21 carries for the Spartans (3-6, 0-2).
STRUTHERS 30, EDGEWOOD 7: STRUTHERS — Three different players ran for 100 yards as Struthers rushed for five touchdowns in an AAC White Tier victory.
The Wildcats (8-1, 4-1) scored 18 points in the first quarter on touchdown runs of 1, 25 and 9 by Willie Mitchell. Mitchell ran for a game-high 141 yards on 10 carries. A.J. Musolino, who amassed 100 yards on six carries, added two more TDs in the second quarter to put Struthers up, 30-0. Keyshawn Chism added another 101 yards on 13 carries as the Wildcats ran for 360 yards on 35 carries.
Gavin Buckmeier paced Edgewood (2-7, 0-5) with 81 yards on 17 carries.
