Hernandez leads Mustangs’ rout

CONNEAUT — A big day by Eduardo Hernandez allowed Grand Valley to unofficially clinch a home playoff game for the second straight year with a dominant 37-7 win over Conneaut.

The Mustangs (9-1) are ranked second in Division V, Region 17, according to joeeitel.com. Hernandez led the way for Grand Valley with 241 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries. Michael McGovern added 67 yards on seven carries as the Mustangs recorded 325 yards and four TDs on the ground. They led 30-0 at the half.

Alex Sturgill ran for 87 yards on seven carries, but the Spartans threw three interceptions and lost two fumbles.

¯ CHALKER 20, ST. JOHN 14: ASHTABULA — The Wildcats scored 13 fourth-quarter points to earn the win. Chalker held St. John to just 1-for-4 on fourth down conversions.

Chalker (4-6) rushed for 229 yards, led by Cody Helmuth’s 94. Four rushers ran for at least 41 yards in the win. Trystan Mollohan threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Helmuth in the first quarter, and then Helmuth later scored the game-winning 16-yard touchdown run.

¯ NEWBURY 29, MATHEWS 28: NEWBURY — Newbury snuck by Mathews thanks to 252 Johnny Chambers rushing yards. Chambers rushed for three scores and finished his season with 1,902 rushing yards and 24 touchdowns.

Chambers also threw for 388 yards and four scores, as he helped lead Newbury (6-4, 3-2 NAC) to its first winning season since 1998. Newbury, however, narrowly missed the postseason, as it finished ninth unofficially in Division VII, Region 25.

Mathews finishes at 5-5 and 2-3, as two fourth-quarter touchdowns weren’t enough to get by Newbury.

¯ WINDHAM 28, PYMATUNING VALLEY 14: ANDOVER — Windham unoffically sealed a playoff berth for the first time since 2006 with a Northeastern Athletic Conference victory over Pymatuning Valley.

The game was tied at 14 at the half, but the Bombers (7-3, 4-1 Northeastern Athletic Conference) outscored PV, 14-0, in the final two quarters. They are currently seventh in Division VII, Region 25, according to joeeitel.com

Phillip Maiorca ran for 205 yards on 26 carries. Hunter Shackelford added 86 yards and three TDs on 15 attempts. He scored on runs of 3 and 9 yards in the second half to rally the Bombers. Windham ran for 316 yards on 46 carries.

Gaige Willis paced the Lakers (2-8, 0-5) with 113 yards on 15 rushes.
