Canfield stuns Niles in fourth
NILES – Canfield stunned Niles with three fourth-quarter scores, erasing a two-touchdown Red Dragon lead on the way to a 23-21 victory in the All-American Conference Red Tier.
Vinnie Fiorenza threw for a touchdown and ran for another, before Sam Accordino knocked home the game-winning 25-yard field goal with eight seconds remaining.
Canfield (5-2, 1-0) sits eighth in Division III, Region 9 after the win. The Cardinals gained 272 yards on the ground, thanks to 113 on six carries by Fiorenza. Fiorenza also threw for 71 yards, as he went 6-for-7 through the air.
Niles (3-4, 1-1) drops its third straight game, as they were unable to hang onto an early lead, yet again. Robbie Savin had a 55-yard touchdown run, and finished with 120 yards on 14 attempts.
LAKEVIEW 42, EDGEWOOD 14: CORTLAND – Lakeview scored twice in the final 21 seconds of the first half to open up a 21-6 lead on the way to the All-American Conference White Tier rout.
The Bulldogs (4-3, 2-2) got two touchdown runs from Tony Crish in the first quarter and a scoring pass from Zach Rogers to Jatise Garrison early in the second for a 21-0 lead.
The Warriors (1-6, 0-4) scored at the 2:29 mark of the second quarter, then Lakeview countered with a short scoring run by Evan Adair with 21 seconds left in the half. On Edgewood’s first play from scrimmage after the kickoff, Cameron Danklefsen picked up an Edgewood fumble and ran 24 yards for the score that made it 35-6 at halftime.
Rogers passed for 188 yards for the Bulldogs and Adair caught three passes for 94 yards.
STEUBENVILLE 24, URSULINE 15: YOUNGSTOWN – The Big Red dominated Ursuline, accumulating 449 yards of offense to the Irish’s 184 in a non-conference rout.
Quarterback Javon Davis completed 14-of-22 passes for 248 yards and two touchdowns for Steubenville (6-1). Shyon Petteway caught thre passes for 137 yards and two TDs, averaging 45 yards per catch. Jacob Bernard ran for 134 yards and one TD on 19 carries.
Ursuline (3-4) didn’t score until the fourth quarter, when Anthony Howell returned a fumble for a touchdown. Joe Floyd paced the Irish with 61 yards on 10 carries. Dakota Hobbs caught a 26-yard pass from Jared Fabry for Ursuline’s final score.
AUSTINTOWN FITCH 38, LAKESIDE 0: AUSTINTOWN – Austintown Fitch’s Randy Smith ran for 106 yards and three touchdowns, and the Falcons shut out Lakeside in an All American Conference, Gold Tier matchup.
Fitch (4-3) held the Dragons to 109 yards of total offense, including 40 yards rushing on 32 carries. Smith ran for scores of 10, 10 and 38 yards as the Falcons took a 31-0 halftime lead.
Shane Hewlett added an interception return for a touchdown, and Nate Fowler raced 31 yards for another Fitch TD.
Gavish Bish led Lakeside (1-6) with 32 yards rushing.
POLAND 34, EAST 0: POLAND – Jonah Spencer ran for 66 yards and two touchdowns, and the Bulldogs shut down East in a non-conference clash.
Colten McFadden booted a school 55-yard field goal to set a school record for Poland (4-3). Mikey Diaz added three catches for 40 yards for the Bulldogs.
East dropped to 1-6. No other information was reported.
