Struthers keeps Steel Helmet

STRUTHERS – The Wildcats ran roughshod over rival Campbell to pick up the Steel Helmet trophy in a 34-8 win.

Even without running back Luke Witkowski, who must sit out the first two games in an agreement with the OHSAA to play this season, Struthers (1-0) gashed the Campbell (0-1) defense for 209 yards on the ground. In contrast, the Wildcats held the Red Devils to just 66 yards of total offense in the game.

Struthers did struggle with penalties, though, recording 10 for 110 yards.

Struthers faces Lakeview last Friday, while hosts South Range next.

POLAND 38, MARLINGTON 17: MARLINGTON – Quarterback Dom Petrony connected with receiver Anthony Calcagni for two touchdown passes in the first half and six times for 151 yards overall to lead the Bulldogs past the Dukes on Thursday.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 24-3 halftime lead and led by as many as 28 points following a Marlon Ramirez 3-yard touchdown run at the 9:30 mark in the third quarter. From there, they cruised to the win.

Poland next faces Northwest Sept. 5.

WESTERN RESERVE 47, COLUMBIANA 12: COLUMBIANA – The Blue Devils scored 39 straight points en route to a rout over the Clippers on Thursday night.

Evan Nesbitt had three first half touchdowns and averaged 9.4 yards per carry, while quarterback John Clegg added another 230 yards and two touchdowns to receiver Joe Falasca through the air. Overall, Western Reserve (1-0) accumulated 487 yards of total offense against Columbiana (0-1).

The Blue Devils host Malvern on Sept. 5.

EAST 36, LAKESIDE 21: ASHTABULA – Despite recording 27 penalties for 285 yards, the East Panthers scored 22 unanswered points to the Lakeside Dragon on Thursday night.

Jawalen Shaw scored two touchdowns in the second half, starting with a 60-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and finishing with an 86-yard scamper in the fourth. The senior totaled for 174 yards on the day.

Quarterback also had himself a night, tossing two touchdown passes of 50-plus yards and totaling 183 yards through the air.
