Brewer is accused of killing the 55-year-old Bufano at the Bingham Avenue N.W. home he shared with his 85-year-old mother, Donatina Bufano. Dominic Bufano had been stabbed multiple times, according to the Trumbull County Coroner's Office.
Prosecutors said Friday that Brewer has a criminal history and previously spent some time in prison. He is due back in court Sept. 30.
Police have not disclosed any information about a possible motive, or what led them to Brewer, who was indicted by a Trumbull County grand jury Wednesday and then arrested by Warren police.
Donatina Bufano, who uses a wheelchair, said she was upstairs in the Cape Cod-style house about 7:30 p.m. when she heard a struggle in the basement. She can be heard on a 911 recording telling a Warren police dispatcher that her son yelled upstairs to her to call the police.
Later, when she yelled down to her son, he didn't answer.
She told the dispatcher that someone had come into the home through the outside cellar door to the downstairs area where her son stayed.
Initially, police said it was possible Dominic Bufano's death was linked to a home invasion. However, there didn't appear to be any forced entry, indicating he may have known who attacked him.
His death marks the city's fifth homicide of 2014.
